I'm getting this for Christmas, but of course, I had to test it to make sure it worked on delivery. (Please tell my wife this if she asks!)
I got it working, and was able to engrave a metal business card before she made me put it away until Christmas.
Setup was incredibly easy - I expected a major assembly project, but it was literally unpack, attach the laser module, load up the software (I used AcmerTool on my Mac, I know that LaserGRBL and LightBurn are options, of course). Adjusted power levels, and it worked like a charm. I'm really impressed!
I'm a University instructor, teaching Computer Science, and in specific, embedded systems are my "thing". This is the best out-of-box experience I've had to date with this sort of equipment.
I look forward to making things with this unit, and to making some instructional videos about it.

The S1 is a great machine when you want to start out and learn the ropes of engraving and software use. It is very well priced and easy to set up and you can get going in about 10 minutes. What lets it down however is the lack of addons (air assist, enclosure etc) that would make those intial first steps easier and give the user a bit more confidence stepping up to a bigger machine.

As a total newcomer to lasers this was a steep learning curve getting to grips with the laser and software and design. After a couple of weeks I’m getting the hang of it and enjoying it.
The laser came well packaged and easy to set up. I went for the 6w machine as you can always use less power but not more.
It’s a steep learning curve and I’m still in the bottom quarter but I’d recommend the the machine as a good starting point for those new to the game
